Competition provides athletes with a clear identity: a role, a purpose, and daily structure built around performance. That clarity does not automatically transfer to life after competition ends.
The athletes who navigate that transition most successfully tend to be the ones who began building an identity beyond the game well before it was necessary, not as a replacement for their athletic identity, but as an extension of who they were the entire time.
Understanding that distinction earlier creates more options later, when the transition eventually arrives.
